Major projects

In addition to strong metal expertise, the Raahe region is best known for its gigantic investments in the energy sector. Our region is one of Finland's leading producers of wind power, and the growth continues. Clean energy is also essentially linked to the hydrogen economy, which is subject to high expectations in the Raahe region. We offer full support for getting involved in projects.

Sub-region on the path to green growth

Our region has exceptionally good prospects, and preparations for growth have been made, for example, by planning a large number of new business plots. When you want to re-locate to the Raahe region, we provide you all the advice and support you need to get to the top and get you up and running quickly.

We want to become increasingly more specialised as a cluster of circular economy and environmentally friendly industries. Green energy investments and SSAB's objective of transitioning to fossil-free steel production are excellent support for the profile. Logistic advantages such as the Port of Raahe, good road connections and rail transport, as well as a strong business network, especially in the metal sector, reduce transport costs and environmental burden.

Northern projects

Thanks to the location and special expertise of our region, local companies have excellent opportunities in participating in major projects in the north.

The Oulu Chamber of Commerce maintains the web page on major projects that shares information about investments and the related opportunities to maximise regional benefits. The Chamber of Commerce organises regular information events on major projects, which are also announced in our event calendar (in Finnish).

Hanhikivi 1

The planned nuclear power plant in Hanhikivenniemi, Pyhäjoki, was a project worth about 7 billion EUR. Fennovoima terminated the plant supplier agreement with RAOS Project Oy, a member of the Rosatom Group, on 29 April 2022 and cancelled the construction licence application on 24 May 2022. At the moment, the future of the use of the area is open. Pyhäjoki has the only plot pre-planned for nuclear power plant use in Europe.
